Can I combine Ethernet and my Android phone's Internet connection on Ubuntu Linux? Yes, Speedify can help!
This article explains how to use Speedify on Ubuntu Linux to combine your wired Ethernet connection with your Android phone's 4G/5G Cellular connection for faster upload and download speeds and a more reliable internet connection.
What You'll Need
- An Ubuntu Linux computer with an Ethernet port (or a USB to Ethernet adapter)
- An Android phone with an active cellular data plan that supports USB tethering
- A USB cable to connect your Android phone to your computer
- Speedify installed on your Ubuntu computer
Let's Get Started
Step 1 - Connect Your Ethernet Cable
Connect an Ethernet cable between your router or modem and the Ethernet port on your Ubuntu computer. If your computer doesn't have a built-in Ethernet port, use a USB to Ethernet adapter instead.
Ubuntu will start using your Ethernet connection automatically. You should see it listed in the System Menu as "Wired Connection."

Step 2 - Prepare Your Android Phone
If you want to use your Android phone's cellular connection (not its Wi-Fi connection), make sure to:
- Enable mobile data on your Android phone.
- Turn off Wi-Fi on your Android phone.
Note: When USB tethering an Android phone that's connected to Wi-Fi, the tethering will share the Wi-Fi connection instead of the cellular connection. To add your cellular connection into the mix, you'll need to turn Wi-Fi off on your phone.
Step 3 - Enable USB Tethering on Your Android Phone
Connect your Android phone to your Ubuntu computer using a USB cable. Then, enable USB tethering on your phone:
- Swipe down from the top of your Android phone's screen to open the notification shade.
- Touch and hold Hotspot to open the tethering settings.
- Turn on USB Tethering.
Alternatively, you can go to Settings > Connections > Mobile Hotspot and Tethering and enable USB Tethering from there.

Step 4 - Using Speedify
Open Speedify on your Ubuntu computer. Speedify will automatically detect both your Ethernet connection and your tethered Android phone and start combining them.
You should see both connections listed in the Speedify dashboard. That's it - Speedify is now combining your Ethernet and 4G/5G cellular connections for faster upload and download speeds and better reliability.
