Speedify Captive Portal Handling

This article explains how Speedify handles captive portals, the login pages that public Wi-Fi networks use before granting you internet access.

What Is a Captive Portal?

A captive portal is the sign-in or terms-of-service page that appears when you connect to certain public Wi-Fi networks, such as those in hotels, airports, coffee shops, and libraries. Before the network lets you browse freely, it redirects you to this page to accept terms or enter credentials.

Normally, connecting through a VPN can interfere with this process because the VPN tunnel is active before the captive portal check happens. Speedify handles Captive Portal better than other VPNs.

How Speedify Handles Captive Portals

When you connect to a Wi-Fi network that sits behind a captive portal, Speedify detects it and acts without interrupting your ongoing VPN session. Here's what happens:

  1. You connect to a public Wi-Fi network that requires a sign-in or terms acceptance.
  2. Speedify detects the captive portal and shows you a notification on your device.
  3. Tapping or clicking that notification opens the Speedify interface and loads the captive portal sign-in page.
  4. You complete the sign-in or accept the terms on that page.
  5. Speedify adds the Wi-Fi connection to your active connections. Your internet traffic continues to be protected throughout the process.
