Android Wi-Fi Tethering Setup on macOS

This article walks you through how to tether your Android phone to your Mac using a Wi-Fi connection. Once connected, you can use your Android phone's 4G/5G cellular connection on your Mac, and combine it with other internet connections using Speedify.

What You'll Need

  • An Android phone with an active 4G/5G cellular connection
  • A Mac with Wi-Fi enabled
  • Speedify installed on your Mac (download it at speedify.com)

Let's Get Started

Step 1

Turn on your Android phone's Personal Hotspot. Open the Settings app and tap More. Then tap Tethering & Mobile Hotspot and toggle the Portable Wi-Fi hotspot switch on.

If this is the first time you're connecting your Mac to your Android phone through Wi-Fi tethering, you'll need to set a hotspot password first. Tap Set up Wi-Fi hotspot, enter a password, and tap Save.

Step 2

On your Mac, click the Wi-Fi icon in the menu bar and select your Android phone's hotspot network from the list. If Wi-Fi is off, click the Wi-Fi icon and select Turn Wi-Fi On first.

If you don't see the Wi-Fi icon in the menu bar, go to System Preferences and open Network. Make sure Show Wi-Fi status in menu bar is checked.

Step 3

When prompted, enter the Wi-Fi hotspot password you set on your Android phone and click Join.

Step 4

To confirm the connection is working, go to System Preferences > Network. Your Android phone's Wi-Fi hotspot should appear on the left with a Connected status. Your Mac is now using your Android phone's internet connection.

Did you know - you can combine multiple internet connections at once on your Mac instead of just switching between them? That means faster upload and download speeds and a more reliable connection overall. Learn how to do that with Speedify.
